From the Trenches of WWI: The Unbearable Lightness of Strangers

Did you know that some two million Muslim soldiers and laborers from around the globe volunteered to serve in World War I? Or that troops from Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Jewish and many other faiths respected and accommodated each other’s differences as they fought side by side?

On Wednesday, July 8, please join us online to hear from Luc Ferier of the Forgotten Heroes 14-19 Foundation. Luc will share how the Foundation has discovered previously unknown documents showing the diversity—and the respect and unity—that thrived during World War I. Personal diaries and letters found in English, French, Urdu, Arabic, and Farsi are yielding many heartwarming accounts of soldiers from various faiths standing shoulder to shoulder in battle.

Despite their daunting position in the trenches, these soldiers shared their lives and accommodated each other’s different cultures, dietary codes, music, and religious practices. Moreover, chaplains, priests, rabbis, and imams went out of their way to learn Arabic, Hebrew, Urdu, English, and French, so that each could perform burials for the dead of other faiths.
